    Description

CAMBRIDGE GLASS CAPRICE BLUE STERLING SILVER OVERLAY # 111 MAYO & UNDERPLATE SET
These two (2) pieces were made by the Cambridge Glass Company, formerly of Cambridge, Ohio and are part of their Caprice pattern line.
These are gorgeous pieces of high quality hand-made and American made pressed elegant glass.
Both pieces are made in a pale blue colored glass that Cambridge called “Moonlight Blue”.
The mayonnaise bowl and matching underplate are also decorated with a sterling silver overlay decoration of “fruits & berries” six places inside the bowl and eight places on the plate.
The outer rim of both the bowl and underplate and the center divider on the bowl are done in sterling as well.
As evidence of the high-quality of this glass the underplate has been factory ground and polished on the underside so it sits level.
The silver is marked “STERLING” in two places on the bowl and four places on the underplate.
I did give a bit of a polish to the sterling to show what it does look like when polished.
This set has been part of my personal collection since the 1980s.
I am in the process of selling this collection that at one time consisted of over 600 unique pieces of Caprice.
You frequently see Crystal or clear colored Caprice with sterling overlay decoration but you seldom see the Moonlight Blue color with the sterling silver decoration.
Specifically, this is the Cambridge Glass Caprice Pattern # 111 8” Dressing Set (there are no ladles with this set).
This set is pictured on Page 123 of the book
    Cambridge Caprice
edited by Mark Nye for the National Cambridge Collectors Inc.
According to this book this set was produced by Cambridge Glass during the period from 1936 to 1945.
A beautiful and rare set (2 pieces) of elegant glass!
There is a very interesting article on silver overlay written by Barbara Wyrick for the August 2007 (Issue # 409)
    Crystal Ball
newsletter of the National Cambridge Collectors, Inc.
It is online and you can find it by searching under the key words “Cambridge caprice sterling overlay”.

    Age and Condition
The piece dates to circa 1936-1945.
It is in excellent mint original condition.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
There are some very minor factory “tool marks” to one small area of the underside of the plate; this is not damage, just the way it came from the factory.
There are no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines or repairs to the glass.
Only some minor tarnish to the silver.
I see no areas of loss to the silver decoration and it all seems firmly attached to me.
There are only a few very light signs of use that I would expect see on pieces of glass of this age.
I will also mention that the mayonnaise bowl rocks slightly on the underplate.
A stunning set in pristine condition!!
Please keep in mind these photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
    Approximate Dimensions
The mayo bowl is about 8.25” (21 cm) across the handles by about 6.5” (16.5 cm) in diameter and the set sits about 3.75” (9.5 cm) off the table.
The underplate is about 8.625” (21.9 cm) in diameter.
    Approximate Weight
About 2 pounds 4.875 ounces (1.046 kilograms) for the set.
    SALES TAX
I am required to charge 6.5% Ohio State Sales Tax on all purchases shipped to an address within the State of Ohio.
