Background:
The .00 Hawaii silver certificate overprint note is one of a series of notes (one Silver Certificate and three Federal Reserve Notes) printed during World War II as an emergency issue after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The intent of the overprints was to easily distinguish US currency captured by Japanese forces in the event of an invasion of Hawaii. The government could then render the bills worthless due to their easy identification.
In June 1942, new overprinted notes were first issued. The overprints have the word HAWAII with two small overprints to the sides of the obverse of the bill between the border and the treasury seal and large HAWAII lettering dominating the reverse. Government officials declared the use of non-overprinted notes redundant and ordered all Hawaii residents hand over their non-overprinted notes in exchange for the Hawaii-stamped notes by July 15, 1942. Starting August 15, 1942, no other paper currency could be used. The HAWAII stamped notes continued in use until October 1944 and by April 1946, notes were recalled. The surviving notes are still legal at value. To this day, the notes remain highly collectible, especially in uncirculated high grades (60 and above).
